UIRTUS (2019)
“UIRTUS (pronounced
weer-toos) The sum of all the corporeal or mental excellences of man: strength,
vigor, bravery, courage, aptness, capacity, worth, excellence, virtue, etc.”
Lewis & Short’s 1879 Latin Dictionary.
UIRTUS is a
public performance that engages with the pressures of maintaining lineages of
Black excellence. It physicalises the toll that familial, societal, historical
and economic pressures can take on a young person during their schooling years.
References to the underrepresented mission-educated Black women intellectuals
of the past and the anxieties of youth unemployment in an economically
uncertain South Africa collide in this audience-inclusive journey of endurance.
